This event has passed. The next Resonance Showcase will be held on Saturday 7 September 2024.

Join us for a showcase of performers supported through Opera North’s annual Resonance programme.

Camille Maalawy, Ni Maxine and Samrai will perform a 20-minute taster set each of their latest work, taking in neo-jazz, art and sacred music, and more. The night will be hosted by and feature performances from Resonance alumni Ladies of Midnight Blue.

Resonance is Opera North’s workshop programme for music creators of colour, working in any genre, and based in the north of England. It’s an opportunity for artists to develop new ideas, to collaborate with performers from other disciplines, and to take work in new directions.

This showcase is a unique chance to see the fruits of their work.

Performers

Ladies of Midnight Blue
Afro-Latin percussion and brass duo comprised of Hannabiell Sanders and Yilis del Carmen Suriel. They create a powerful and upbeat fusion of rhythms, weaving combinations of melodic percussion, brass, vocal chants, and mbira.

Camille Maalawy
Egyptian mezzo soprano Maalawy, together with composer Mark Slater and percussionist Guy Schalom has created a song cycle fusing Arabic and European musical styles in response to pharaonic hieroglyphs, contemporary poetry, art and sacred music, which examines what it means to be an outsider.

Ni Maxine
Neo-jazz composer and vocalist Maxine explores themes of home, love, identity, self-esteem and justice, painting the picture of the modern Black British woman. Her striking jazz and gospel influenced vocals will be accompanied by a pianist.

Samrai
Musician, DJ, curator, and facilitator Balraj Samrai showcases their debut album Work & Roti which delves into the care and reciprocity at the heart of the migrant experience, weaving South Asian percussion and rhythms throughout. They will be joined by guests LINTD and SCAPA.
