In this course you will learn to sing and stage the ‘Chorus of Women’ & ‘Chorus of Sailors’ from Gilbert & Sullivan’s opera HMS Pinafore, alongside other sea themed repertoire.

Over the course of four weeks you will work together with Vocal Animateur Marie Claire Breen and Drama Practitioner Gemma Woffinden to explore how singing, movement and drama are brought together on an opera stage, culminating in an informal sharing of work in the final session.

What should I expect on the day?

In each session you will work with singing & drama professionals as you learn to semi-stage the Chorus of Women & Chorus of Sailors from Gilbert & Sullivan’s opera HMS Pinafore, alongside other sea themed repertoire. All of our sessions are led by friendly professionals from the Opera North Education team.

Do I need to read music?

As this course is aimed at more advanced singers, some experience of music reading would be helpful, however we will be sharing a range of learning tracks before the course starts which will be suitable for those that prefer learning by ear. A link to learning tracks will be sent to you in advance of the start of the course. 

Where is the session?

The session will take place in the Harewood Studio, located in the Howard Opera Centre, Opera North’s home in the centre of Leeds. The full address is: Howard Opera Centre, 8 Harrison Street, LS1 6PA.

The Howard Opera Centre is around a 10 minute walk from Leeds bus station and a 15 minute walk from Leeds train station. Buses to the centre also stop nearby on The Headrow, Vicar Lane and Boar Lane, all of which are within a 5-10 minute walk of the venue.
