FILM: Volver
This event has passed.
A special screening of Pedro Almodóvar’s 2006 comedy-drama Volver (Spanish for ‘to go back’ or ‘return’) with a flamenco guitar performance before the film, presented in association with Instituto Cervantes Leeds.
Centring on an eccentric family of women from a windswept region south of Madrid, Penélope Cruz stars as Raimunda, a working-class woman forced to go to great lengths to protect her 14-year-old daughter Paula. To top off the family crisis, her mother Irene returns from the dead to tie up loose ends.
As well as being nominated at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Academy Awards, the film came away with the title of Best Screenplay at the 59th Cannes Film Festival as well as Best Actress – which was shared by the six stars of the film.
Before the screening, flamenco guitarist Tom Metcalfe will play a set of songs inspired by the film’s soundtrack.
