Education and engagement

Opera North Education seeks to encourage people to explore the art form of opera and the work of Opera North; to connect with communities and inspire the next generation.

We believe that all young people should have the opportunity to experience and engage with opera both in and out of school and encourage school groups to see our mainstage productions.

If you would like to know more about opportunities to access our work and how to gain support in introducing your students to opera, contact us using the details at the bottom of the page.

Singing Through the Ages

An introduction to the Chorus of Opera North for Year 9 — Year 13 Music Students.

A wonderful vocal opportunity. Hearing the Opera North Chorus up close was a truly awe inspiring musical experience for all involved.

John Hall, Teacher

Singing Through the Ages is an interactive performance featuring the Chorus of Opera North for pupils studying GCSE and A-Level Music in school Year 9 — Year 13. The performance, taking place in your school setting, aims to introduce pupils to the incredible live sound of an opera chorus through a selection of operatic and choral repertoire spanning the Baroque period to the modern day.

This 1 hour interactive performance has been programmed by Opera North Education in conjunction with secondary school music teachers to ensure we are meeting the needs of the secondary music curriculum. The performance will introduce pupils to music from some of Western Classical Music’s great composers, which will explain and demonstrate:

  • What opera and an opera chorus is
  • How music conveys mood and emotions
  • The effect of tempo, dynamics, articulation and tonality
  • The use of texture (e.g. – homophony & antiphony)

Thank you very much for organising the Schools' Matinee in Newcastle, it was absolutely brilliant and so nice to see the place full of kids enjoying opera; I think it may have been the best yet.

Workshop & Schools’ Matinee Package: for KS2-4

Pupils understood the story. They were immersed in the entire production because of that prior exposure to source material during the workshop.

Teacher, Low Road Primary School

In Spring 2019, Opera North Education will be supporting teachers across the North of England to deliver their drama and music curriculum through the medium of opera. In addition to presenting a performance for schools of The Magic Flute by 18th Century composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Opera North is offering a series of supporting in-school 2 hour preparatory workshops. Workshops will help pupils explore the music, plot and characters in Mozart’s opera, working alongside a Director and Pianist. A free teachers’ resource pack will also be available for all schools attending a matinee performance.

Big Sing: Alice in Wonderland

An immersive singing project for KS2-3 pupils, inspired by Will Todd’s opera Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, culminating in performances with the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North.
