Cut your carbon footprint, gain knowledge and insights from a professional trainer and join like-minded people with our carbon literacy workshops.

Opera North is a company with a global outlook, and we believe it is our responsibility to put environmental thinking and action at the heart of what we do. From eco-friendly event transport to integral changes in our building and fully recyclable sets for Not Such Quiet Girls and upcoming Alcina, our award-winning Green Team is a catalyst for positive change. One of our key actions has been training all staff to become carbon literate, the first opera organisation to do this.

With all Opera North staff now happy recipients of their certificates, we’re delighted to be able to offer this great opportunity to you, our supporters. Opera North’s Senior Technician, Jamie Saye, will guide you through the course, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience. A certified Carbon Literacy trainer, Jamie is the co-founder of Sustainable Arts in Leeds (SAIL,) a not-for-profit organisation tackling climate change.

“Jamie is a really engaging trainer, making complex issues easy to understand and driving awareness of how to make a positive impact on the world.”

The training session will cover:

  • What it means to be net zero carbon
  • How we can achieve net zero as a society
  • How we can achieve net zero as an industry
  • What we can do as individuals, both in our own lives and within our organisations

How is it delivered?

The training has been developed and will be delivered by Jamie Saye, a certified Carbon Literacy trainer. The course has been developed by Jamie and checked and approved for delivery by the Carbon Literacy project.

The training session will be split into 3 parts:

  • Part 1: self-guided learning on the science behind climate change (approx 3.5 hours)
  • Part 2: Zoom call with Jamie on what action is already being taken nationally and within the cultural industries (1.5 hours)

At the end of the training session, each participant will then complete a participant details form where they will pledge 2 actions that they are going to take as a result of the training.

Each participant will then be awarded with a uniquely numbered certificate awarded by the Carbon Literacy project which certifies that the learner is a Carbon Literate citizen.
