Renowned session player and original member of Nightmares on Wax, Chris Dawkins tragically passed away in May 2025.
Chris was known for his distinctive musical output – a rich blend of soul, jazz and hip hop. Over the years he collaborated with artists including Maurice Fulton, Jimi Tenor and Corinne Bailey Rae, while also working closely with long-time collaborators Leigh Kenny and Wulls.
His own work included three solo albums – Hero’s Journey, Painting Colours and Rastanaut – alongside the collaborative project Dawkins & Wulls, each showcasing his unmistakable musical style.
Chris will perhaps always be most widely recognised for his role in the early years of Nightmares on Wax, playing a pivotal part in shaping DJ E.A.S.E’s evolving sound in the early 90s on era-defining releases such as Smokers Delight and Car Boot Soul.
This special evening brings together friends and collaborators to celebrate his life and music. At the invitation of one of Chris’ closest friends, Hamlet Luton, DJ E.A.S.E reunites the original Nightmares on Wax line-up: DJ E.A.S.E, Isaac Heywood, Hamlet Luton, Sarah Garvey, Rhianna Kenny, Leigh Kenny and Dan Goldman.
For those raised on electronic music in Leeds, it doesn’t get much better than this.
Support from:
• The Flying Hats (ATA Records) – Chris’ most recent band project
• Jamettone – an improv jazz/hip hop group featuring Chris’ daughter Shaneen Dawkins (bar performance after the main show)
• Wulls
In association with Leeds Jazz Festival.
