A playboy (Cary Grant) and a nightclub singer (Deborah Kerr) meet aboard an ocean liner, and – although they’re both returning to their partners in New York – fall helplessly in love. As the ship docks, they decide to see if their whirlwind affair will stand the test of time, and hatch a plan to meet at the top of the Empire State Building in six months, having split from their other halves. But a terrible accident en route to the rendezvous throws their plans for a future together into doubt.
Grant and Kerr’s easy chemistry, natural comedy and sassy dialogue steers this classic Hollywood love story clear of the cornball. Nora Ephron paid extended tribute to it with Sleepless in Seattle, and it still tops lists of the greatest romantic films of all time: perfect for revisiting on the big screen in anticipation of Valentine’s Day.
