Benh Zeitlin’s remarkably joyful film is a moving exploration of the personal cost of climate change.
The Academy-Award nominated fantasy-drama follows a bayou dweller named Hushpuppy and her father, Wink. Their world is disrupted when Wink falls ill and nature spirals out of control – temperatures soar, the ice caps melt, and ancient creatures are unleashed. With water levels rising and Wink’s health deteriorating, Hushpuppy embarks on a quest to find her long-lost mother.
The film’s beating heart is six-year-old lead Quvenzhané Wallis. Despite having no acting experience, the casting team were won over by her reading ability, powerful scream, and strong sense of morality.
“superbly energetic vision of climate catastrophe”
