Melodic Memories

Monthly sessions

More information

Running since 2021, Melodic Memories offers a programme of music-based arts activities for people living with dementia and their carers. It provides a relaxed, supportive and welcoming space for them to explore singing, gentle movement and elements of visual arts together. Session content will draw inspiration both from the work of Opera North (including an Opera North Relaxed Performance each season) and the interests of participants themselves.

Led by vocal animateur Marie Claire Breen, pianist Leighton Jones, and occasional guest artists – including musicians from the Orchestra of Opera North – workshops take place on a monthly basis at the Howard Opera Centre in Leeds.

All sessions include refreshments.

This project is run in partnership with Leeds Peer Support and participation is via an initial referral through their service.

Please contact Debbie Marshall, Peer Support Co-ordinator at Deborah.Marshall@leeds.gov.uk or 07891 271980 if you would like to proceed with a referral.

All workshop dates will be communicated via Leeds Peer Support. There is a small administrative fee charged by Leeds Peer Support to support the running of the programme.

If you have any further questions about our Melodic Memories programme, please contact Claire Armour, Community Engagement Producer at lifelonglearning@operanorth.co.uk

When do the sessions take place?

Sessions usually run between September and March. We usually have one workshop in September and October and then a block of 3 workshops in November and February, focused on a specific theme and linked to a Relaxed Performance.

Workshops generally take place between 13:30-15:30 on a Tuesday, but sessions involving guest artists may take place on a different day/time, which will be communicated to you.

Where do the workshops take place and how easily accessible?

All the workshops take place at the Howard Opera Centre, 8 Harrison Street, Leeds, LS1 6PA. It is not possible to park at Howard Opera Centre, however drop off outside the venue is possible.

There are car parking options available close to Howard Opera Centre.

What can I expect when I arrive?

Upon arrival at the Howard Opera Centre you will be welcomed at reception by Claire Armour, Community Engagement Producer. You will then be directed through a door next to the entrance that leads to our dedicated Learning space, the Bramall Studio. The session will start informally with a chat and refreshments will be served at the end.
