Opera Uncovered: “The Smooth World’s Double Face”

Understanding the Uncanny in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw

Wednesday 5 February | Doors 5:30pm, Event 6pm – 7:30pm
The School of Music, The University of Leeds, LS2 9JS

Join us for a bespoke lecture with Doctor Edward Venn as he revisits Britten’s attraction to The Turn of the Screw and its musical realisation – by means of Freud’s notion of the uncanny. Utilising first-hand knowledge of Opera North’s production this Winter season, Doctor Venn’s lecture will draw on psychology and aesthetics to shed new light on the work and the ways in which Britten encourages the audience to empathise with the doomed characters.

The lecture will last approximately 1 hour, there will then be the opportunity to ask your own questions.

How our Friends make a difference

Our Friends are brought together through their passion for Opera North. They see our opera productions, explore music in new ways and champion our Education programme.

Together, the support from our community of Friends across the UK makes a big difference to the Company. Each year our Friends support a new production, bringing music and opera to audiences across the north of England.
