The Brass of the Orchestra of Opera North exchange their tailcoats for something a little more comfortable, bringing the sounds of the clubs and ballrooms of Harlem to Leeds Town Hall for this lunchtime concert of sophisticated, swinging jazz suites and songs.

Sultry and unforgettable melodies from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess are followed by a selection of the songs of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday: A-Tisket, A-Tasket, Dream a Little Dream of Me, and God Bless the Child, sung by mezzo-soprano Molly Barker of the Chorus of Opera North.

German composer Hans Werner Henze’s brilliantly witty Ragtimes and Habaneras take us on to the exotic landscapes of Duke Ellington’s Caravan – and back to Ella, who recorded it for her 1957 Ellington Songbook album.

With Opera North’s Chorus Master Oliver Rundell conducting and playing piano, it’s a great way to spend a Monday afternoon in Summertime.
