OperaVision introduces Opera North's Ring cycle to audiences across the world

A new online destination for opera, OperaVision, launches today and one of the first productions to be featured on the site is Opera North's critically-acclaimed production of Wagner's Ring cycle.

Supported by the European Union’s Creative Europe, OperaVision brings together 30 opera companies from 18 countries and will help audiences across the world broaden their operatic knowledge with a varied selection of extracts, stories and documentaries, alongside performances chosen to illustrate the rich repertoire that the art-form offers. One of those selected is Opera North’s concert staging of the full Ring cycle, Richard Wagner’s 16-hour masterpiece, which was filmed at Leeds Town Hall during 2016.

Directed by Peter Mumford and conducted by Richard Farnes, Opera North's Ring was one of the most critically-regarded opera projects of recent years, praised for both the highest standards in musical performance and for its clarity and accessibility to new audiences. Dispensing with set, costumes and props, the production placed the orchestra centre-stage bringing Wagner's intensely powerful music to the foreground, with lighting, video design and a triptych of screens enhancing the performances and providing an English translation of the German text.

The first opera in the Ring cycle, Das Rheingold, will be broadcast on OperaVision on Saturday 28 October, with each act from the remaining three operas – Die WalküreSiegfried and Götterdämmerung – to follow weekly throughout November and December. The entire Ring cycle will then be available to watch on OperaVision for six months after which it can be viewed at

Our Ring cycle will be available via OperaVision from the following dates:

Saturday 28 October Das Rheingold
Saturday 4 November Die Walküre Act I
Saturday 11 November Die Walküre Act II
Saturday 18 November Die Walküre Act III
Saturday 25 November Siegfried Act I
Saturday 2 December Siegfried Act II
Saturday 9 December Siegfried Act III
Saturday 16 December Götterdämmerung Act I
Saturday 23 December Götterdämmerung Act II
Saturday 30 December Götterdämmerung Act III

very nice production, love the subtle decors, great singers and mostly appreciate the very extensive subtitles. Hoping to find this production on blue ray......does anyone know if they were recorded for distribution on disks???

The purest and most beautiful Rhinegold I have seen with subtle acting, voice and music more important than distracting set and costume. The essence of Wagner distilled and presented with a simplicity that promotes understanding and relevance. Thank you so much for making this available online.
