It’s the classic musical you know and love, brought to glorious life by our live 40-piece Orchestra and a stellar cast featuring the Chorus of Opera North. Complete with the same heart-warming, fun-filled songs that have captured thousands worldwide in the last 60 years – Do-Re-Mi, My Favorite Things, Edelweiss and more.
The story needs no introduction… Worlds collide when free-spirited nun Maria is made governess in the strict household of Captain von Trapp. Through music, play and an infectious zest for life she wins the confidence of the seven von Trapp children, and even softens the Captain’s guarded heart. But beyond the warmth and humour of this beloved musical lies a powerful tale of love and standing together when it matters most.
Whether you’re indulging in a bit of nostalgia, creating brand new family memories or planning a sparkling summer evening at Leeds Grand Theatre with friends, The Sound of Music is pure joy that will stay with you long after the final note.

Yes. The access provisions on certain show dates are extras to make our run of The Sound of Music as inclusive as possible. The show you see on that day is the same full musical production as any other day, and open to any audience member.
At the signed performances, you can expect to see BSL interpreter on the side of the stage, signing the script and songs. At audio-described performances, there will be a live description of the visual elements of the production delivered through a headset. At captioned performances, all the dialogue, including sound effects, and the name of who is singing or speaking, is displayed on two screens either side of the stage. You can find out more about access at Opera North here.
Yes! We recommend the show is suitable for ages 8+, and child tickets are £10 off in any price band across the theatre. The total show time is just 2 hours 30 minutes (shorter than the film) including a 20-minute interval to grab an ice cream. There are matinee options and shows at the weekends and during summer holidays if you’re still worried about staying up late on a school night.
Whether you’re getting here by car or public transport, Leeds Grand Theatre is easy to reach. There are a range of nearby car parks, and we are within walking distance of Leeds Train Station and Leeds Bus Station. You can find detailed information here.
To get straight to the point, no. This is The Sound of Music, the musical, featuring our wonderful live Orchestra of 40 musicians and the Chorus of Opera North, with many of our Chorus members taking named roles.
No. Whether you’ve seen the film or not, you’ll still be able to follow the storyline (and probably recognise a few tunes!)
Leeds Grand Theatre is an old theatre and does get hot. Please dress appropriately and keep hydrated. Free drinking water is made available around the theatre. Otherwise there’s no dress code!
Further details can be found on our Access page, including information on our Access Membership Scheme, available alternative formats, and specific venue guides to help you plan your visit.
The incense being used in this production is Frankincense Gum Resin. It will be burned on top of a small piece of charcoal, releasing the scented smoke. This will be distributed in the auditorium from 40 minutes before the house opens by Assistant Stage Managers.
