Woodwind and Horn Academy

1 – 2 June 2021

This event has passed.

The Opera North Woodwind and Horn Academy is a two day intensive programme for young Woodwind and Horn players to work alongside and learn from specialists from Opera North’s Education department and the professional players of the Orchestra of Opera North.

The Academy will focus on developing the skills used in ensemble playing and the special relationships and roles of the different Wind instruments in these settings. Participants will experience playing in ensembles of varying sizes and instrumentation. Carefully chosen repertoire will allow participants to look closely at what makes a great wind ensemble and to focus on developing specific playing techniques.

In addition to repertoire rehearsals, players will participate in intuitive music workshops as well as performance and technique masterclasses which give the opportunity for peer and professional feedback.

Participants will be placed into a group of no more than 15 young musicians and accompanying professionals with whom they will remain for all sessions. Read our Covid Safety Measures.

Each day players will :

  • Explore ensemble repertoire with the professional players and education specialists of Opera North
  • Participate in sectional and tutti rehearsals
  • Learn, experiment and develop ensemble communication skills through intuitive music workshops
  • Participate in instrument-based masterclasses and technique workshop
  • Play side-by-side with the professional musicians and tutors of Opera North
  • Meet new people and make new friends
